About Rory

Rory was born on 1st March 2010 by Caesarean Section in the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin; he was brought straight to The Special Baby Care Unit as he had fluid on his lungs. He was let home 5 days later. During his first ten months of life Rory was constantly ill and spent a lot of time with doctors and specialists.

On January 7th 2011 the Endocrinology Team in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin diagnosed Rory with Pseudohypoparathyroidism Albright’s Hereditary Osteodystrophy which is a very rare genetic disorder also known as Albrights Syndrome. This is where the body fails to recognize and respond to the parathyroid hormone. The parathyroid hormone is involved in controlling the blood levels of calcium and phosphate; some of these problems include developmental delays, seizures, lumps of calcium under the skin, obesity, along with a number of others.

Rory is under the care of nine specialists in Our Lady’s Children Hospital, including Endocrinology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Respiratory, Dermatology, Cardiology, Urology, Dental, and a Dietician, as a result he is a regular visitor to the hospital.

He also attends Four Winds which is the Early Intervention Team with St. Catherine’s where he receives a number of therapies including Physiotherapy, Speech and language, Occupational Therapy, Education and Nursing.

The care and support that Rory receives from each team in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and St. Catherine’s has been and continues to be outstanding and is invaluable to him and his family.

Rory today is doing extremely well and is a very happy and loving little boy that is cherished by his family and friends.

In 2012, as a way of thanking all the teams that look after Rory, Robert Doyle (Rory’s father) and his friend Neil O’Toole ran 2 1/2 marathons in aid of 2 1/2 year old Rory to raise vital funds for St. Catherine’s Wicklow and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin raising over €10,700.00 Euro.
